Recognizing and Eliminating Implicit Bias In Law Firms and In-House Legal Departments

While dealing with explicit bias, such as overt sexist or racist jokes or comments is very hard, implicit bias also creates serious problems for law firms and in-house legal departments.  It often goes unnoticed, and therefore, not remedied.  In fact, most people have some implicit bias that they do not even recognize they have. It is often our unconscious or hidden beliefs and attitudes that underlie our behavior about diversity. Implicit bias can lead to failure to hire diverse members, and diverse members of organizations not receiving the recognition for their work that they deserve, not getting the same quality of assignments as their peers, and therefore, not growing into leadership positions. When leadership positions at a firm lack diversity, clients with diverse backgrounds often do not receive the understanding and care they deserve from their attorneys. Implicit bias also leads to high levels of stress for those being discriminated against.

This program covers specific ways to recognize implicit bias in both ourselves and others, and provides proven ways to eliminate this bias.  This program also discusses ways to eliminate implicit bias directed towards us. The program is based on the MIT and University of Chicago Study on diversity, well researched solutions, and the presenter, Ms. Gina Steele’s, own experience with overcoming the bias that she experienced as a female computer science patent attorney.  An example of these specific practices include review policies with specific objective criteria, rather than the reviewer's subjective feelings.
